26 January: Why?

Its 26 January today and India is celebrating its Republic Day. However, it has never been quite clear to me why we have an "Independence Day" (15 August) and a seperate "Republic Day"! I would appreciate it if someone helped me to understand this apparent incongruity. Have also heard, among other things, that we owe our independence to the Naval Mutiny of 1945! There are many who believe that Gandhiji was not the architect of our independence, but it was Netaji Subhas Chandra Basu who was directly instrumental in bringing about India's independence. It would be very nice if someone clears this matter for me.
Further, the Communist claim that "Yeh Azadi Jhoota Hai" (The freedom we have got is a false one) . Can someone help me about this "slogan" of the Communists?
